Discover the Cultural Heart of Zhemgang: The Kheng Region
Located in the lush southern part of Bhutan, the Kheng region of Zhemgang is a vibrant blend of rich culture, pristine nature, and timeless traditions. Often referred to simply as “Kheng,” this area is home to the Khengpa people, an ethnic group known for their strong heritage and deep connection to the land. From tranquil rivers and dense forests to lively festivals and local craftsmanship, the Kheng region offers an immersive experience that captures the essence of Bhutanese rural life.
Cultural Heritage of Kheng
The Khengpa people speak Khengkha, a dialect from the Bumthang language family. Known for their resilience and self-sufficiency, the Khengpa have adapted to the rugged terrain of the region. Traditional crafts like weaving, carpentry, and bamboo work are central to their daily life. Visitors can witness these skills in local villages, where the arts are passed down through generations.
Kheng is also a deeply spiritual region, with monasteries and sacred sites. Temples such as Buli Lhakhang and Gomphu Monastery are key spiritual hubs, attracting both pilgrims and travelers with their rich history and serene surroundings.
Natural Beauty and Wildlife
Zhemgang, including the Kheng region, is often called Bhutan’s “wildlife capital.” The area is home to the Royal Manas National Park, one of the country’s oldest and most biodiverse protected areas. The forests of Kheng shelter Bengal tigers, elephants, golden langurs, and a wide array of bird species, including the striking Rufous-necked Hornbill.
The Mangde Chhu river, flowing through Kheng, adds to the region’s allure. Whether you’re trekking along its banks or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, the river is a vital lifeline that sustains both the local communities and the rich ecosystem around it.
