Women in Bhutan

Women in Bhutan play a significant role in society, enjoying relatively high social status compared to many other countries in the region. In some regions, Bhutanese culture traditionally follows a matrilineal system, where property is often inherited by daughters. Women actively participate in agriculture, business, and household management, contributing significantly to the country’s economy.

In recent years, Bhutan has made efforts to promote gender equality through policies that encourage women’s participation in education, politics, and the workforce. Organizations such as the National Commission for Women and Children (NCWC) work to address gender-based issues and empower women. However, challenges persist, including gender disparities in leadership roles and limited access to resources in rural areas.

Despite these challenges, Bhutanese women are increasingly stepping into leadership positions, entrepreneurship, and public service, reflecting the nation’s commitment to gender-inclusive development.

When traveling through Bhutan, it becomes evident that women are confident and strong, playing vital roles in the household economy. They are gracious hosts, and it’s a wonderful experience for women travelers to connect with them, sharing stories over a warm cup of tea or hot wine by the hearth.
